Turkish Cypriot Leader Ersin Tatar met with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov on Monday.
The meeting took place during an official visit by Tatar to Kyrgyzstan, in which he also gave a lecture at the Manas University and was awarded an honorary doctorate, among other engagements.
Following his meeting with Japarov, Tatar spoke to the north’s public broadcaster BRT, and said “I explained to him that their support for us should increase. I told him the Turkish Cypriots can reach the point they deserve.”
He added that his visit to Kyrgyzstan had been “very successful”, and that he wants to “improve relations between the TRNC and the entire Turkish world”.
The meeting represents Tatar’s first visit to a member state of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) outside of Turkey since his non-invite to the organisation’s summit in November.
In September, the Republic and Kyrgyzstan had signed a memorandum of understanding on political consultations between the two countries, aiming to “deepen the institutional framework of bilateral cooperation.”
Tatar’s appearance on BRT also coincided with Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis saying a United Nations Envoy to Cyprus would be named the same day.
Reacting to the news, he said “we can meet if they appoint a personal representative, rather than carrying on with the federation approach. We are following the matter.”
