US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken urged Congress to accept a request from the Joe Biden administration for additional funding for Ukraine.
According to European Pravda, Blinken said this during a briefing.
He recalled that last week Biden asked Congress for $24.1 billion to “continue to support Ukraine’s security, economic and humanitarian needs, and help other countries that are suffering from the consequences of the Russian war.”
“I call on Congress to pass this additional funding bill immediately,” the Secretary of State said.
The State Department is working with Ukrainian partners on long-term security commitments to help Ukraine deter and defend against Russian aggression, he said.
“Ukraine must be clear about the long-term nature of our support and the support of many other countries that will provide Ukraine with similar commitments. President Putin must be clear about the futility of continuing his aggression,” Blinken added.
Media speculate that this time it could be more difficult to approve the funds than in previous cases, as Congressional Republicans are under great pressure to support their fellow party member, former President Donald Trump, who has questioned the need for such significant support for Ukraine, and among American voters, support for aid to Ukraine has declined slightly.
Against this background, the non-governmental organization Defending Democracy Together, critical of Trump, launched a campaign calling on Republican lawmakers to continue supporting Ukraine.
At the same time, the White House is confident in maintaining bipartisan support in Congress on the issue of additional funding for Ukraine.
