Ombudsperson of Kyrgyzstan Jamila Jamanbaeva and Ambassador of the EU Delegation Marilyn Josefson held a meeting.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the situation of ensuring human rights and freedoms in Kyrgyzstan. The parties exchanged views on the promotion of fundamental values of human rights, democracy, the rule of law and civil society in Kyrgyzstan.

Jamilya Jamanbaeva noted the EU’s contribution to strengthening democratic values and high standards of human rights and freedoms in Kyrgyzstan.

Jamilya Jamanbaeva stressed that the Ombudsman Institute is taking all measures to improve the situation with human rights in the country.

“In particular, a draft constitutional law on Akyikatchy has been developed. The bill was initiated by the leaders of six factions of the Jogorku Kenesh. The document has now been submitted for public discussion,” Jamilya Jamanbaeva said.

Akyikatchy stressed that after the adoption of this law, she will definitely initiate the issue of accreditation of the Ombudsman Institute to the “A” status.

Ambassador Marilyn Josefson expressed confidence that the EU will provide the necessary support to the Ombudsman Institute.

“The EU highly values the work of the Ombudsperson’s Office in Kyrgyzstan and is ready to continue assisting to strengthen its role and independence, and in supporting reform measures that are aligned with the Paris principles and allow Kyrgyzstan to seek A-status” said the Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Kyrgyzstan.

Jamilya Jamanbaeva noted that the Ombudsman Institute has drafted a development strategy, and it includes an important role of the EU Delegation to the Kyrgyz Republic.

“If we dwell on specific examples, we are planning to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the right to freedom of speech as soon as possible, adopting the best practices of European countries, in particular, studying the practice of the Strasbourg Court in cases related to freedom of speech, based on which we could develop specific recommendations , draft regulations. In this matter, we are counting on your support,” the Ombudsman said.

The parties agreed to deepen cooperation for strengthening democratic values and high standards of human rights and freedoms in the Kyrgyz Republic.
