The Ministry of Health confirmed that two unvaccinated children died of measles in the first six months of 2023. A three-year-old boy in Bishkek city and a one-year-old baby in Chui region died of this disease, their parents said, because of their religious beliefs, they refused to get their children vaccinated.
According to official data, 1704 cases of measles have been registered since the beginning of the year. Most of them were in Osh region (609 cases) and Bishkek city (277 cases).
The next places are Osh city (277 cases), Chui region (165 cases), Jalal-Abad region (94 cases), Batken region (89 cases), Talas region (74 cases), Issyk-Kul region (59 cases). Only six cases were registered in Naryn region.
The ministry called on parents to vaccinate their children on time, warning that otherwise there would be serious consequences.
Measles is a highly contagious and serious airborne disease. The World Health Organization says that hundreds of thousands of people die from this disease every year, most of them are children under the age of five.
There is an opportunity to avoid this disease in Kyrgyzstan. For that, the child should receive the appropriate vaccine when he turns 1 and 6 years old.
In December 2017, measles began to be reported frequently in Kyrgyzstan, reaching 2-3 thousand per year. Not registered in 2020. Three patients were registered in 2021, and only one in 2022.
