The Ministry of Digital Development of Kyrgyzstan encountered technical difficulties in implementation of the decision to ban TikTok. Azattyk reported, citing Bektur Ibragimov, a representative of the Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Policy.
However, the decision to ban the popular Chinese social media app remains unchanged.
«Our decision to ban TikTok is in force. The Ministry of Digital Development was supposed to implement it. But there are technical difficulties. The work has not yet been completed,» the media outlet quoted the official from the Ministry of Culture as saying.
The Ministry of Digital Development, which 24.kg news agency contacted for comment, said: «Currently, appropriate measures are being taken, and appropriate work is underway with the relevant state-owned enterprises on the TikTok issue.»
The Ministry of Culture sent a request to block TikTok to the Ministry of Digital Development at the end of August. This decision caused a wide resonance both in society and among experts. There is widespread belief that the ban on the popular social media app will worsen the problems of small and medium-sized businesses, damage freedom of speech and democracy in Kyrgyzstan, and reduce opportunities for self-expression among young people.
