Counteroffensive braves heavy Russian resistance to push Kremlin troops out. The Ukrainian army has liberated a critical village in the Donetsk region, widening their breach into Russian defenses on the southern front. Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar confirmed the liberation of Urozhaine on Wednesday morning. Urozhaine is located a few kilometers southeast of Staromaiorske, which Ukrainian forces pushed Russia out of last month. The village’s liberation is a significant victory for the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which is slowly progressing through heavily mined Russian lines of defense, Ukrainian military analyst Roman Svitan told POLITICO. “Russians had an established stronghold in Urozhaine alongside Mokri Yaly River that…
Kyrgyzstan is responding with what might be described as defiant compliance to a request by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee for the Central Asian nation to curb allegedly illicit trade with Russia. Watchdogs contend that Central Asian states act as a back door for Russia, helping the Kremlin get around Western sanctions to procure goods to keep the country’s economy afloat and its war effort in Ukraine going. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have received the most attention for possible sanctions-busting trade. But in early August it was Kyrgyzstan’s turn. In an August 8 letter sent under the aegis of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Bob Menendez,…
Lake Issyk-Kul is the second-largest alpine lake in the world and one of the key attractions of Central Asia. Issyk-Kul is perhaps the greatest tourist attraction of the forgotten Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan. It is one of the largest alpine lakes in the world. The lake is somewhat salty – which stops it from freezing during the cold Central Asian winters (it has a salinity of only around 0.6% – much less than the 3.5% salinity normally found in the world’s oceans). Kyrgyzstan is one of the pearls of Central Asia, just waiting to be discovered by international travelers.…

The government of Kyrgyzstan has signed an agreement with a Chinese consortium to build four hydroelectric power plants with an investment value of between $2.4bn and $3bn. The deal concerns the Kazarman hydropower cascade, a project that has been under discussion since 2011, the Asia-Plus news site reports. The Chinese companies involved are PowerChina Northwest Engineering, Green Gold Energy and China Railways 20th Bureau. An independent probe in Kyrgyzstan has concluded that the National Television and Radio Corporation (NTRC) created a network of fake social accounts to promote the government’s policies and attack its critics. The claim has been denied by state TV as well as the office of President Sadyr Japarov. The investigation — Does The President Need The Support Of Fake Accounts? — was conducted by the Checkit Media group, which includes several independent media outlets in Kyrgyzstan. The video report said that pro-government reportage and comments have increased on Kyrgyz social media since the taxpayer-funded NTRC opened a special department to disseminate information…
Libya’s state-owned oil company, the National Oil Corporation (NOC), had established last month a new program office, but multiple foreign press reports claim that one of the staff running the office is embroiled in a major fraud case in Kazakhstan. Peter Sztyk, a Canadian lawyer and entrepreneur who also goes by the name “Petro”, has joined a group of foreign consultants who will manage the Office of Strategic Programs, which the NOC inaugurated in February 15 during a meeting with local oil industry executives in Benghazi. Who is Peter Sztyk? The Canadian lawyer graduated in 1993 from Concordia University with bachelor in…
