The United States has tightened its strategy regarding the Russian war in Ukraine so that Kiev can achieve the return of the occupied territories, writes the British Times newspaper, citing a senior official of the American administration. “We want Ukraine to win and keep all its territory. The goal is to ensure its sovereignty and independence, and this will mean the return of all the lands, ”he said. Previously, the United States called its goal not the defeat of Russia as such, but the protection of Ukraine and providing Kyiv with a strong military position by the start of diplomatic negotiations. Congressman Seth Moulton…
As new details emerge about the AUKUS technology-sharing agreement between the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, a regional expert says the deal’s success requires both flexibility and sustained political support in all three countries. The long-term nature of the AUKUS agreement that would pursue a nuclear-powered submarine capability for the Royal Australian Navy would require consistent support from successive governments across all three partner nations through the 2060s. For AUKUS to result in a nuclear submarine fleet for Australia, the effort will require political support for the next three to four decades, regardless of the parties elected in…
“The Instagram user bespredel_kg wrote that if I do not delete the video and ask forgiveness from the Kyrgyz people, he will kill me,” reads aloud 19-year-old Zere Asylbek, sitting in a small cafe in the centre of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital. Just a few hours after the publication of her first video called “Kyz” (The Girl), the singer became a celebrity in her homeland and she was catapulted into the spotlight as a spokesperson for women’s rights in Kyrgyzstan. But she also became the target of criticism and even death threats. In the video, which Zere funded herself, she appears in a…
Earlier this month, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States unveiled one of the most ambitious defense industrial partnerships in recent history: a submarine deal designed to equip Australia with nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) as fast as possible. The deal consists of three unprecedented elements: an agreement by the United States to sell Australia three to five Virginia-class submarines beginning in 2032; the co-development of a new AUKUS-class submarine by the United Kingdom and Australia to enter service around 2040; and a multibillion-dollar pledge by all three countries to expand the capacity of a trilateral submarine industrial base. But from the standpoint…
Australian unions have restated their position in favour of a “nuclear-free defence policy”, creating a headache for the Albanese government over the $368bn Aukus nuclear submarine acquisition. The position, restated by Australian Council of Trade Unions president, Michele O’Neil, on Tuesday, was seized on by the Coalition, which claimed it sent a “confusing signal” for Labor and its industrial wing to be divided on nuclear submarines. Since the deal was announced earlier in March, the Albanese government has faced criticism from former prime ministers Paul Keating and Malcolm Turnbull, and former Labor ministers Doug Cameron, Gareth Evans, Kim Carr and Bob Carr.…
New Zealand’s government has confirmed it is discussing joining the non-nuclear part of the Aukus alliance founded by Australia, the UK and US. “We have been offered the opportunity to talk about whether we could or wish to participate in that pillar two [non-nuclear] aspect of it,” said Andrew Little, the New Zealand defence minister. “I’ve indicated we will be willing to explore it.” It comes a week after New Zealand’s foreign minister, Nanaia Mahuta, visited top Chinese diplomats, who raised concerns at the military tie-up between Australia, the UK and the US, which is centred on Australia receiving nuclear-powered navy…
